On the Northern Norwegian islands, the Lofoten, a huge wooden longhouse has been reconstructed. The original stood here in the late Iron Age, in the 6th century AD and was excavated in the 1980s. It is one of a ‘chain’ of about 10 – 15 of such chieftain seats, but the only one found so far.
The 83 metres long reconstructed farm stands at the heart of the experience, housing an archaeological exhibition as well as giving space to craft demonstrations. The central part of the longhouse is the banquet hall where visitors can taste lamb stew in the high season. Costumed guides accompany the visitors oftentimes per day. During the high season, as many as six languages are spoken here.
The entrance area holds a large shop and a similarly large cafeteria. Beyond the longhouse, one can walk towards the harbour where a copy of the Gokstad Viking ship is situated which is being rowed by visitors during the season. Near the harbour there is a smithy and an activity area for children. On the land of the museum, several animals are finding a place, like boars, horses, sheep and cattle.
Biggest events of the museum are the yearly Viking festival (the northernmost) and a play, called Sagaspillet. Both are a big attraction to tourists as well as locals. As the Summer season is short and intense, guides from various European countries work here for 3 months to return again for the Winter. Demonstrations of various prehistoric crafts take place during the season, with specialists from all across Europe attending.
